New Bern has the small town charm and population, but when you combine the surrounding area towns and Pamlico County, it becomes the 25th largest micropolitan. Not just any small town meets the criteria to be considered a micropolitan by the U.S. Census Bureau. A micropolitan must have a core area with outlying communities that contribute to the economy of the core. That's small town New Bern! The geographic area of New Bern is larger than most people envision. My wife and I live in Pamlico County with New Bern as "our town".
